A long-established Confectionery Company of "Omika Manju"


"Omika Manju"(a steamed bean jam bun) is a popular confectionery well known in Hitachi area.
We interviewed "Unpeido Honten" which is the manufacturer of the product.

<The History of Unpeido Honten>
  The establishment of the company goes back to 1868. The founder, Gosuke Iwata, opened a store named "Ashikagaya Seika" in Oarai-cho. As the owner of the second generation, Toichi Iwata moved the store to Kuji-cho. Finally the store moved to present address in Omika-cho, which was called a part of Sakaue-village in Taga -county then. The name of the store was changed by Toichi Iwata. Toichi was good at making a sweet called "Unpei".  People called him by the nickname of "Unpei-san". That is the origin pf the name "Unpeido Honten".

  "Omika Manju" manufactured by Unpeido Honten was chosen as the imperial confectionery twice in 1974 and 1975. As the motto of the company, the third head of Unpeido Honten said "We make the supreme confectionery at the price that children can purchase." Unpeido Honten is a local company continuously making local confectionery that can be available in the local area.
  Today the president of Unpeido Honten is Mr. Unpei Iwata. He is the 5th head of the company. He was adopted as the husband of the daughter of the Iwata family. His first name happened to be Unpei. And he is good at cooking. Those points were appealed a lot when he was introduced to the Iwata family.

<About Omika Manju>
  Omika Manju is the top sales product of the company. The ingredient of Omika Manju is red beans(Azuki) harvested only in Tokachi. The special sweet bean paste is made by filtering again and again. Then it is covered with dough made mainly from rice powder and Yamato potato. They steam the buns not using any preservatives. The persistence and business effort of the company to keep the qualities of the ingredients are remarkable. To keep the same qualities of taste, the key is to extract them from supreme natural ingredients. They study new techniques of process and preservation. At the same time they avoid using chemical products which effect the taste of product.

<Employees' Education>
  As the CEO, Mr. Unpei Iwata demands the staffs of manufacturing line to have "patience", "ambition" and "ability of observation". He tells the sales staffs that they should refrain from the acts which make themselves feel bad. And also, he tells them that they should count on each other. Above all , he stresses every staff to be in good health.

  Omika Manju is a traditional type of confectionery which is not influenced by fashion trend. Our company want to be proud of selling "just an ordinary confectionery" and how it comes from is clear. We aim to make confectionery that parents feel safe to feed their children. And those children can feed their next generation with same product.
