Papaw, a unique fruit produced in Juo machi

January, 2018
Do you know a papaw? A papaw is a rare fruit being planted in Juo machi, Hitachi City. A papaw is called "custard cream in the forest". It is well known for its sweet and rich taste and smell. As the period of its best season is very short and it soon goes bad, a papaw is not often distributed as a fresh fruit itself. Therefore a papaw is called a phantom fruit.
Juo machi once lacked its own special products. So the commercialization of papaws was promoted as a revitalization process of the town. Products using papaws were developed here for the first time in Japan. Papaw sweet wine(\1,620) and Papaw ice cream(\270) have been commercialized. They are certified as Hitachi brand products and the local special products by the city government.
The papaw products can be purchased at product center shop "Uki Uki" in Juo machi, and in JR Hitachi station information center. On line shopping is also available through the following URL. https://papaw.stores.jp/
