Hitachi City is topographically blessed with mountains, hills, lakes, ponds and shorelines. If you go out with experienced guides, you can see over 100 species of birds over the year. We introduce you the appropriate place for bird watching and what kinds of birds you can see.
　The birds that fly over high mountains can be seen in the north such as Takahagi City and Kita Ibaraki City. Fairly big birds like swans that like fresh water can be watched in many appropriate places in Naka City and Mito City. Moreover Hitachi is convenient from the point of view of traffics.and can be noted as rich environment for the lovers of birds watching. In Hitachi City bird watching tours are regularly held by Wild Bird Society of Japan and similar groups. Ordinary citizens can participate in the tours. In addition, in every February, ”Bird Watching Tour by Hitachi Citizens” is held by organization supported by Hitachi City..

　The bird of Hitachi City is Japanese Cormorant. Hitachi is the only location in Japan allowed to capture Japanese cormorants. There is a hut for capturing them in Ishihama,Juo Cho,which supplies cormorants for “Ukai”.(fishing with cormorant)
