| 1. Outline
of Hitachi Cable, Ltd. Manufacturing electric wires and copper products was started in 1918 at a small shop on the premises of Hitachi Works of Hitachi, Ltd. which spun off from Hitachi Mine, Kuhara Mining Co. in 1910. In 1956, Hitachi Cable, Ltd. began operations with the transfer of the full electric wire business operations from Hitachi, Ltd. The rank of annual sales of Hitachi Cable, Ltd. is the fourth in the Japanese wires and cables industries. Hitaka Works started operations in 1958 as the second shop of the company and it is the main manufacturing shop of Hitachi Cable, Ltd. Major products are wires and cables, electronic wires and wiring devices, industrial cables, information and telecommunications networking cables, and fiber optics and telecommunication cables. One of the unique features of the Hitachi Cable, Ltd. is that five of the seven manufacturing shops are closely located in the northern areas of Hitachi City .This is beneficial for logistics in the company operations, and for housing of employees. As the results public relations in the communities are active in many fields. 2. Typical Products Wires and cables were main products at earlier stage of the company. Recently business scope is expanding to such areas as electronics devices and information networking based on its wire and cable manufacturing core technologies and for the demands of the industrial society. Business are supported by its key technologies of cable manufacturing. For example, high-performance copper technology provides heat tubes for air conditioning systems, and brake hoses for automotive parts based on the technologies of insulation rubbers. These have high shares in the industries. Hitachi Cable’s electric wires and cables for train cars have also been used for interior wiring in train cars such as the Shinkansen (bullet trains). As a sophisticated material product, Hitachi Cable, Ltd. manufacturers a comprehensive range of products for optical devices and electrical devices using GaAs compound semiconductors. Hitachi Cable, Ltd. provides optical submarine cables that transmit large volumes of information between continents. They are manufactured at Minato Works and rolled into special vessels anchored at the Hitachi Pier, Hitachi City. |

3. Sports Activities Wide varieties of circle and group activities are run by employees. Marathon and basketball teams of Hitachi Cable, Ltd. have been keeping high records in national events. The marathon team achieved the 11th of record, the best record of the team, in the National Industrial and Commercial Championship Team Race in January, 2007. The team has been participating in the Industrial and Commercial Champion Team Race twenty times in the past five years. The team runs as a guest team in the Sakura (Cherry) Road Race of Hitachi City every April. The basketball team, ”Bull Dogs”, is a member of Japan League of Basketball. Its annual record of 2006 was the third in the Japan League of Basketball. The team gives basketball classes as community clinic activity and takes part in local festivals, and it serves as a volunteer group for the environmental activities in the city. 4. Public Relations in the Community The Hitaka Works provides job experiences to students of local elementary and junior-high schools. Some second- year students of a junior-high school had desk work experience at a manufacturing shop in the same uniforms as the employees. A student hoped to have the experience of the manager of the basketball team. Gymnasiums and athletic grounds are open for use of the local communities and Hitaka Works is active in the festivals of the communities. 5.
